One of the possibilities for roads is to add plastics. While plastics enhance the properties of the roads, the environmental impacts do not seem to have been published. Has anyone done any work on this?
In the article linked below is explained how to apply a Life Cycle Assessment to recycled plastic used in asphalt mixture (specifically, as a bitumen substitute).
Along the same paper you could find some others references using plastic in asphalt, some of them dealing with the environmental aspects.
Nevertheless, most of these contribution focus on a particular issue and I do not know any contribution dealing with the general issue of environmental impacts of plastics in asphalt mixtures as in a review

Dear Jeff, I suppose there is to evaluate plasticisers runoff from plastics, and their absorbtion or not by bitumen, and then the environmental impact. A leaching test from various asphalt mixture could be a good start point, looking for plasticisers, but they are so many. At the moment to my experience in Europe no study has been done, because main bitumen modifiers are SBS or EVA.
