Does anyone have a reference for "Previously it was assumed that each cystic fibrosis patient independently acquired Pseudomonas from the environment"?

I have seen words to this effect in many papers, but no one seems to have a citation for it. There are citations for the initial discovery of transmissible strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis patients, but not much that actually describes the alleged consensus from before this discovery.

Did anyone ever actually think this? Given the prevalence of CF summer camps and similar social gatherings from before the discovery of transmissible strains it seems likely this was the theory at the time, I just can't find it in writing.

[edit: the study which says it wasn't just environmental is Cheng et al. 1996, so whatever started the assumption of always environmental must pre date this]
