One aspect of this is the concentration that has happened over the last 40 years or so. Old hands will recall once important companies like Fluka, Riedel or Pharmacia, which were swallowed by larger companies. Even Sigma, once very active in this, has now been acquired by Merck. IMHO, anti-trust authorities must have been in suspended animation for this to occur.
Yes they are expensive, especially now that these techniques have become the basis for many areas of research.
I agree with Junjie Shao, by contacting the company, you can sometimes get a discount, not a huge one, but one that allows you not to use the whole budget for the purchase of reagents.
