Does anybody know this "slimy" organism? Growing on very wet tufa (Cratoneurion community) in Swiss Prealps. Algae? Cyanobacteria?
Gregor:
You may kindly pinpoint the specimen you are talking about and add magnification scale.

I have looking in http://www.algaebase.org/,
Is it Nostoc or Rivularia or Ecballocystis?
Best regards
By the look of it, my guess is in the bacterial kingdom, not the algae. Keep me informed, it's a very interesting life form!
It is looks like Nostoc (N. commune maybe) or some heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria, but for better identification you need a micro -photo.
Thanks a lot for your hints.
Dear Gregor:
Very beautiful picture!, I think as the other collegues that it is a Cyanobacteria.
If you can take some microscopic picture of this material it would be posibly to determined it .
Kind regards.
Eugenia
I found similar growths on Mayan monuments with Gloeocapsa bituminosa (Bory) Kützing (Cyanoprokaryota – Cyanobacteria) as main component. Also subaerial and epilithic. But you need to see under microscope.
In case of BGA it is difficult to identify without microscopic photographs, some times BGA associated with filamentous chlorophyceae members.
thank you
The pictures were taken in Guishan Mts in Yunnan. The fungus is ca. 10-12 cm high.
