This looks as a paradox of the Big Bang theory. The further we look in space the Universe is getting larger and larger. But, at the same time, the further we look in space we are also traveling back in time and the Universe should be smaller as we are getting closer to its "birth" singularity moment?

Thank you very much for the replies. I have two additional questions:
1. Where is the observer in relation to the expanding universe?
2. How we know that the (sound wave) Doppler Effect is the only explanation for the (electromagnetic wave) "red shift". What if a photon, traveling millions of years through space is loosing some of its energy also causing the "red shift" effect.
Perhaps one of the possible meaningful models for the geometry of the universe would be the Riemann's sphere?
