Humic acid omnipotent is an integral part of organic matter playing an important role in the ecosystem. Unfortunately having a dark color it is quite difficult to work on using spec. methods.
For UV/visible spectrophotometry, you can simply dilute the sample(carefully) in pure water. All of the wavelengths that you are interested in should give absorbance values of less than 1.5 (or 1 depending on the instrument). You can then correct the absorbance value according to the dilution factor. Here is a paper I recently published that includes UV/Visible measurements on humic rich swamp water samples (not isolated humic acids, but similarly dark color), you may find the method section and some of the references within useful.
