E-learning is increasingly used for training both health professionals and patients, but it doesn't seem to be a lot of research on patient education programs on such platforms. Does any of you know such work? Both quantitative and qualitative studies should be interesting. Also theoretically oriented approaches are indeed welcome.
If any of you have practical experience in this field we would very much like to learn from you, not only published research is interesting.

you might want to check on Richard Osborne's activities on health literacy. He has also developed an online-self-management program called stepping up (see attached link).
The Stanford Patient Education Center has also done some studies on online self-management support with chronic illness (Kate Lorig, Phillip Ritter).
Several researchers from the UK (Anne Kennedy, Anne Rogers, Caroline Sanders) have published articles on the subject of matter.
In the Netherlands, there is an interesting project going on using online / social media elements for young people with arthritis (see other link).
Finally, you might want to check Neil Coulson's blog post on the potential of peers in the digital aera (third link).

I have conducted ethnographic study of social network sites for health. My dissertation study focuses on people touched with diabetes (patients, caregivers etc) educating each other on a social network site for diabetes. If you are interested in this particular view. You might have a look at PATI - a Patient Tailored App for patients with Breast cancer, which was recently developed by researchers in Cork to educate patients about breast cancer, with particular emphasis on information tailored to their own disease type. This is the reference:
