I'd like to produce plastic modified bitumen. I have mixed plastic with bitumen at 180 C, but they didn't mix together homogeneously. The plastic stood on the surface of bitumen. Does anybody know how to solve this problem?
Not every polymer is suitable for asphalt modification. High molecular weight PE/PP are generally not compatible with asphalt and not suitable for asphalt modification. There are oxidized and/or semi-crystalline lower molecular weight PE/PP available which are compatible with asphalt, e.g. Honeywell asphalt additives product line. Olefins typically do not add an elastic response to a binder at higher temperatures, their effect is more of plain stiffenning in a similar way as oxidation or acid modification do. Most of PmBs are modified with elastomers to gain elastic response at high servise temperatures and better resist road rutting. Typical example of elastomer used in paving industry would be styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer.
