As a non-profit CHDA with health outcome funds, we encounter cases of children with EBLLs during our home rehabilitation and lead remediation. We are wanting to build a coalition to support the children and their families during the home rehabilitation process and provide needed medical services. What communities are successful and how did they achieve successes? Resources welcome!
Jennifer, appreciated your initiatives for such a important problem related to poisoning in children with EBLL. This subject require mass awareness and cooperation.
In my experience working with families to identify (together) hazards and issues in the home is effective.
Teaching and increasing awareness, building knowledge of what LP is, and how to address EBLL is very important. The programs I have been involved with starts with dietary manipulations for EBLL up to 20. Any level above the 20 should be referred for medical follow up and chelation. Any child with LL that are under 20 but remain consistently high are also included in the dietary and medical referral pathway. (The LL referenced were specific to a midwest state)
One aspect that is particularly concerning is that each state has it's own interpretive guidelines related to what is LL and how to teach and treat.
Another is the follow up. By establishing a partnership with families, you increase trust, cooperation and increase empowerment. All key to creating behavior change and compliance.
In my prior practice the target audience was inner-city populations living in rental or leased property. Landlord refusal to remediate was high and sadly, there was no enforcement.
There is a community based group called United Parents Against Lead but not sure how active they still are. http://www.upal.org/ In NC, we have a Lead and Healthy Homes Taskforce which is a group of state, local, and non-profit professionals working on the problems of lead poisoning prevention and providing healthy housing. It has been very effective at providing a platform for sharing best practices.
