Well you ain't going like it but I think there's memory associated with implicit spatial awareness and also related to our explicit contemplation of form. Two distinct process of awareness with a form of memory for each. This kind of 'evaluation' is arrived at intuitively, on an experiential basis.

Try these for an intro to Vision-Space. The second one looks at what occurs in central vision that may be more relevant to your question in that it at least shows what goes on at a perceptual level in central vision. i.e. what occurs to be memorised. Not pictures but dynamical processes.

Please see publication listed on my profile, first author Jonna Nilsson, which looks at allocentric and egocentric spatial reference frames using a virtual reality programme under fMRI conditions. The specific aims of this research however was to compare a group of patients suffering from depression with that of health controls. Not sure if that was what you were after.
