Antioxidant Essential Oils and Main Compounds to Treat Chronic Diseases: Current Developments and Trends

Call for Papers

The essential oils (EOs) represent a mixture of highly complex, naturally occurring, volatile compounds synthesized by plants as secondary metabolites. They are widely used for the treatment of diseases around the world (by traditional medicine practitioners, public health services, and phytotherapy practitioners), as well as in the production of new drugs, medicines, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceutical supplies, among others. The main compounds of EOs are terpenes and phenylpropanoids which are attributed the principal biological properties of them. Moreover, they have been widely studied and used against chronic clinical conditions, such as neurodegenerative disorders (such as Alzheimer disease, AD, and dementia), chronic pain, and inflammatory and neglected diseases.

The development of drugs from compounds from EOs has grown in the last decades and their antioxidant properties have been especially important for this. However, deleterious effects described from EOs (and main compounds) such as common systemic toxicity, few studies on bioavailability, fleeting efficacy, and little specificity for specific targets have limited therapeutic use in chronic clinical conditions.

Thus, we invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that seek to address antioxidant activity of EOs and main compounds as important tools to management of chronic disease.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Identification and characterization of EO components
  • Toxicological effects of EOs: in vitro and in vivo studies
  • Bioavailability of EO components
  • Clinical or preclinical studies showing antioxidant properties in the treatment of chronic diseases
  • Multicenter clinical studies demonstrating its applicability in chronic diseases but molecularly describing the antioxidant properties
  • Technological strategies used to enhance its antioxidant effects in the management of chronic conditions
  • Studies on AD, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and other neurodegenerative conditions
  • Research on the potential of EOs on neglected diseases and arboviruses
