Regarding Vitamin D
Normal ranges for vitamins are, in part, a carry over from ranges set 100 years ago as bare minim values necessary to prevent overt disease. So for vit D you saw ranges like 20-40 coming into play. Meanwhile values amongst indigenous people in the tropicals were found to average in the 60-70 range. Mortality U-curves tend to show problems below 25 and above 80. Vitamin D content reported in foods might be highly inaccurate. Mushrooms, for example, have been known to produce large quantities of vitamin D if left in the sun for a few hours after harvesting, but this practice is not standard.
Vit D - A Gripe at Standard Dermatology Guidelines
One primary impact of standard dermatologist advice has been to, perhaps, cause an overall increase in skin cancer by encouraging sun screens that block UV-B, crucial to melanocyte activation, resulting in an overall increase in the less invasive skin cancers whose spread is inhibited by higher vitamin D. (In contrast, some of the most pernicious skin cancers have growth rates not significantly accelerated by sun exposure). Meanwhile, the reduced vitamin D increases the prevalence of all other cancers. Moreover, from personal experience I can attest that on the topic of exercise I have often been geared to look for any possible excuse to not exercise. When morning distractions delayed my early morning jog until noon time, fear of cancer from the bright sun was once plenty enough to cause me to skip exercise that day altogether. (Also, as a final jab, it turns out that many spray on sun screens have been actively carcinogenic).
Regarding Bones
I found MK-7 (a K2 vitamin) to be interestingly significant in osteoblast activity. Nato snot, the highest concentration natural source, is a strange but healthy substance (also high in PPQ). Also bone strength and growth tends to require mechanical strain. Astronauts lose bone mass without this. So do most less active humans with age. Brief bouts of resistance training can play a significant natural role, where IL-6 and other cytokines get the tightly coupled osteoblast/osteoclast machinery rolling in useful directions targeted most directly at precisely those bone regions having experienced the greatest stress/strain.
