Do you think the following desalination system is practical (see the attachment)?
We don't need Md to reach high salinity at output...if we reduce Mf , , and keep Md constant, output salinity will be increased....

I'm not sure what i I answer your question but the technology is very practical and used in many plants around the world.

The reason the volume is very large is because the Md stream is a water vapor stream which has a very low density, hence, very large volume.
There are many benefits to such a plant but benefits needs to be compared to the alternative. This alternative is the most common desalination method today: Reverse Osmosis. Reverse Osmosis plant (for seawater desalination) is usually 1/3 the price of a mechanical vapor compression plant and requires 1/3 the power consumption.
But, on the other hand, Mechanical Vapor Compression has many advantages over reverse osmosis, some of which are:
- Very high quality product (distilled water)
- Quick and simple installation of standard, factory assembled and skid-mounted units
- High availability and very high reliability for continuous and safe operation
- Lower operation and maintenance costs (besides the power consumption)
- Longer plant life expectancy
- Minimal requirements for intake and pretreatment systems
- Smaller foot print and lower chemical consumption

The advantage is more water production and higher salinity of the brine. The disadvantage is higher energy consumption and tendency for scaling. Actually, the water chemistry will usually limit the end salinity you can reach.
