Many people spend almost all of their leisure time in different social media ( like Facebook, WhatsApp, .. Research Gate). Some people spent a part of their working time also in some social media.
Yes! Excessive use of social media can result in addiction. That is, it becomes a habit leading to compulsive dependence on the social media for happiness and a crave for it.
Social media (networks) are massively addictive. Most people I know check and interact on social sites constantly throughout the day. And they have no idea how much actual time they spend on social media.
Addiction is a health condition and it happens according to certain patterns, common to almost all kinds of addictions. An addicted person should look for professional assistance. This is the worst enemy one may have because it lives inside one's mind and control his paths.
I am new to researchgate but find myself addicted to it because it provides an amazing instrument to connect with scholars across many disciplines. This is truly inspiring and my addiction is a welcome development in my life.
If you spend time and more time without purpose is and addiction; if you use these social media for any purpose is not addiction is a tool to create things and products...to improve yourself in different aspects
I agree with your views . Social Media for discussion in any political affairs come forward with the way they represent their talk by showing their knowledge , with their idealistic ego talking with the readers of various parties on the chair during their discussion for quite good certain time & some time with no positive result or guideline .
It is impossible to be tuned in today without entering into social networks. Of course the balance and distribution of your time should be rationalized so as not to become hostage to these innovations. The important thing is to explore what is positive in these virtual environments.
In recent times, academically, a trend of universities is transforming from journalism or mass communication to Media Studies. Incubation of department of media studies is adopted by many higher institutes. Categorically, the private universities are expanding their media domains. I believe the fame of social media is not durable. The social media introduced distance learning programs, webinars, and video tutorials of sophisticated systems. Contrary, the social media introduces a rapid transmission of sharing and communication which also brings an awareness in common public (even non-educated persons utilizing social media (+ or - activities), pensioners and grandparents liking and sharing their old and golden memories).
Another aspect is adopting too much social media systems, engendering eye diseases in users particularly the generation of this era of technology. The cure demands advances in Ophthalmology, Ophthalmological research, and eye specializations. Thus, optics industry/business is in increasing demand.
The adverse impacts of adopting social media and spending time their cause decline in express tribunes, newspaper, publication of books, up gradation of a library, networking of friends in evening, family gatherings, etc.

for me social media usage addiction is constructive as long as such platforms are adding value to your life in terms of enable learning, effectively managing social connections, avoid boredom, etc. In fact, addiction to platforms such as Research Gate is a good trend.
Yes I'm an addicted to social networks I have time devoted to these sites and can not complete the day without entering one of the social networks. I consider social networks addictive when most young people.
But since joining Researchgate befor two months I have seen it as a useful site.
yes I think that ...but R.G....Compulsive addiction ... because its degree is required in the assessment of the researcher (this in our university)....
Actually, if you love reading and curious about exploring other disciplines, then researchgate provide you the venue. I am new to researchgate and enjoyed the past few days connecting with amazing people from across the globe. Typically, this time of the year I would have been watching football! Using the disease logic, then the cell phone, TV, internet, Nagivation systemsetc are all diseases of our modern age! By the way, I still don’t have Facebook account! Amir
Amir -- You make me smile because I have often thought of sports fandom as a geek/nerd thing, so it could also be thought of as an addiction. :-)
Remember that some addictions are harmless. If I do not drink my coffee early enough in the day, I get a little headache, so I ALWAYS drink my coffee early. Many people would not even consider this to be an addiction, in the true medical sense.
Other addictions are very harmful to the person addicted.
Everyone is different, but I am not convinced that social media represents "substance abuse" for 99% of people.
Similarly, I am not convinced that sports fandom represents "substance abuse" for 99% of people. ;-)
Well, I disagree to some extent. Thete really are people who cannot go without yocial networks. The virtual world for them is often more important rhan the real one. They even trust to the hirtual and not to the real. Isn't that addiction we should worry about?
Just now I read the article following your link. It is written mainly for development of one social media disorder scale through online survey may be required for further study. It has a little relation with large data base report which can be considered as a good and tough document.
I do not think that the Research Gate is a leisure activity, it's probably a smart job to exchange experiences between scientists, to learn different points of view in order to establish the truth, and in general to obtain new information for thinking. In general, I believe that the use of any social media is a personal affair of every person and is not an addiction. Just some people like to sit for a long time, others do not, it's all a matter of taste. For example, we do not say that fast food is an addiction. Every intelligent person should understand the harm of fast food, but this is not an addiction. Just some people likes fast food, and others do not. The same regarding for smoking.
I know person who is "addicted" from Facebook. This person publishes pictures on Facebook, her own comments on political and cultural events, comments on many matters. It takes her all of her free time.
ResearchGeta is not so addictive, I think.... serious scientists are here who can manage their time.
100% addiction. When you can't control the use of something it is deemed as addiction. People spend all their time on social media without realizing it is cutting them short of other activities. However, it also depends on what they do with the social media platform.
Social media has become an indispensable part of our daily lives. There are many useful applications of social media but excessive use leads to personal, social and occupational problems causing social media addiction. Please have a look at these useful links.

Yes it may be addiction for some people. It is entertainment for few. It minimizes attraction towards own work. But it has positive sides also as it ingrates people.
Anyone who is consumed by a hobby might be called "addicted" given the implications of the question. For example, sports fans often fit the profile to be called addicted -- they MUST get their fix every weekend and they are obsessive-compulsive about their dependency. :-)
Addiction is a term with strong negative connotations. Where is the line drawn between a hobby, passionate interest, and something that is harmful?
