I have heard that some universities started using RG score as one of the criteria that evaluate the excellence of their faculty members. They are thinking about making the RG score in their annual evaluation form as well.
Do you think that what RG has is really fitting the needs of such scientific institutions?
Dear Mustafa besides your comment let me tell you that still there are thousands of good scientists round the world who are not the memebers of research gate even but have made tremendous contribution in the field of science. So in my opinion making RG score as one of the criterion for evaluation of progress of a scientist is fallacious in toto.
I think that publications, conferences, scientific communications and excellent teaching is enough to evaluate the faculty members. RG score depends on different tools that may not reflect the scientific ability for some people.

You are right Mumtaz Ganie, and that what makes me surprized and posting the question above. What I've heard actually is that university encourages all their faculty members to be apart of RG and contribute in there. Still not a good idea for me.

@Mustafa, You are right! RG score, based on its 4 components, does not give a real picture of faculty member/ professor or scientist. I do not think its application should be a good idea. There were many discussions about this issue, I could find some in RG database if You are interested in. Regards!

Using it at the moment may not be a good idea but its possibility in future can't be ruled out.
I think that this move may be an incentive to encourage faculty members to actively engage with an international community of researchers. After all, connections may lead to collaboration and increased visibility of the results produced at the given university. IMHO the RG score is not and cannot be directly a component of research/teaching excellence. But, it may indicate that a faculty member is making good use of social media tools which can lead, in the future, to the increase of other & more traditional performance indicators.

Because it is going crazy that everybody tries to publish his/her papers and try to make high RG in different ways just to fulfill the requirement of the university, which I think is not the right way.
@Janos Toth, thanks for bringing up this point. You are right collaboration between researchers is the perfect way to expand ideas and spread knowledge, which are among the main goals for universities, but what if some people are lacking to the communication skills, but have a perfect contribution in science? Where should they be in RG?
