Mobile story telling allows users the ability to create news content anywhere and everywhere. Do you think these user generated news have a spot in mainstream news?
As far as mobile storytelling goes, I've heard of mobile-generated content that went viral which led to mainstream news coverage. I know a lot of tabloid papers do write-ups on viral vines or memes, but the quality of these kinds of media are generally not the best. Especially with video, something recorded on a phone would not necessarily transfer over well on a big screen. Although you do see viewer-submitted video (citizen journalism) from time to time, I feel that the quality is sometimes a deterrent.
As far as written content, I can see mobile-generated stories being integrated into mainstream news storytelling as a way of adding a more human element to stories. Say there is a huge fire, and mainstream media covers the story, they could integrate short snippets of mobile-generated stories to create a more dynamic story. Perhaps the integration of mobile storytelling into mainstream media will take away from media framing, with mobile-generated stories becoming a form of watchdog journalism.
Yes but the other question is, can it be a reliable news to be published? Who are the editors (gatekeepers) then the issue of authentication will follow. Anyway, in today's world of globalization and fast-pace technological advancement especially in telecommunication, we can't avoid of having news feed from people around the world. It's citizen journalist. Whether the mainstream media want to publish the news, again it is up to the respective media.
At the same time, social media can drive what news rises to the headlines - including the recycling of "old" content. This is an interesting take on what seems to be generating online news traffic (specifically, postulating what led Washington Post to exceed NY Times recently): http://www.cjr.org/analysis/washington_post_vs_new_york_times.php
That piece is slightly indirect with respect to the original question, but perhaps it offers a parallel account of the power of social media to drive specific stories or topics into headlines.
For sure it is a able to secure a place in the mainstream storytelling because nowadays many people are bonded to their phones to check out what is happening in the outside world more than they are bonded to the traditional mainstream storytelling. This can be due to many reasons such as the ability to get mobile generated news stories wherever and whenever u r while also being able to know what do people think about a specific aspect and react with them in a profound way.
Mobile generated news is currently being an important platform for storytelling and news sharing thus it has already secured its place in the mainstream news storytelling because they are complementing and completing each other in a fascinating way. But I think that in the future mobile generated news will secure a much greater place not only in the mainstream news but in our lives as a whole.
