Smart application and Google earth and google maps are now becoming a huge geo spatial data base and this may decrease the use of software related to GIS
I think science is not finished, and that's what we're seeing fast. And the evidence is the emergence of numerology and mathematics in all fields of applied scientific and develops with the emergence of renewed theories and did not disappear
Using GIS for the last 12 years I can tell you that changes are happened in a direction to make the use of GIS simpler and easier to let users produce geospatial products and solutions. In the last years, we see new tools and applications that promote the interoperability of different platforms. What already happened is the handy tools that required limited code skills as you need only to act as configurator to your projects and not as a developer. I do believe that next year's GIS software will continue to expand capabilities and functions as it happened in the last years.

Modern branding and marketing have created a superficial association of 'GIS' with certain companies and products, but really, GIS has been with us since cave paintings of animals showed the relative placements relative to the settlement campfire and will be with us in the future as we document trans-plutonian objects far from earth. Even pre-digital there were giant systems that processed information over large regions using electromechanical devices: https://railwaywondersoftheworld.com/signalling.html ... the Hanseatic League had a formalized system of collecting captains logs upon return to home port, where the were compiled with other reports over decades in navigation products.
GIS softwares are very effective in managing multi-criteria decision making processes. In addition, software such as ArcGIS Pro has started to use deep learning methods. That's why I think GIS software will be more effective in the future.
The multi-disciplinary uses of GIS are just beginning to be realized across different sectors and user communities. With increasing data types, tools like GIS are needed to simplify the complexities and realize the benefits of data. While the Google apps mentioned have revolutionized our exposure to "the map," the apps are limited in what they currently offer. GIS is here to stay for a while until more AI enters the realm.

I see GIS as a tool used by different professionals to solve problems. Therefore, I think GIS will even be enhanced with more innovations in terms of software and techniques improvements. There may also be much more migration to cloud-based GIS databases and applications.
GIS will be expanding more in various application and platforms. With Big Data and Machine Learning, GIS can be simpler and easier to use and reliable in forecasting.
