Most of the educational institutions do not allow the use of smartphone for Mobile Learning in the classroom. Whereas the use of smartphone has drastically increased by Generation Z.
Which arises few concerns:
1. Will the use of smartphone enhance the productivity and improve the students results in terms of M-Learning.?
Or
The use of smartphone will have negative impact.
2. It might have a positive impact on Generation Z as online learning but might not be much effective for Generation Y.?
Faisal Khalil In my opinion, students should be allowed to use the Mobile phone. Mobile learning also puts huge pressure on teachers to make interesting lecturers and be prepared.
Faisal Khalil I think generation Z is comparatively more tech savvy then generation Y. With increased smartphone usage, now people of my age or younger people do not mind using mobile while talking to others, comparatively, I think baby boomers, mind if someone uses the mobile phone while talking to them.
Also, the usage of Mobile for learning is increasing among the new generation, and older people feel that mobile has a smaller screen.
Usage of mobile is also increasing, and i think wearable phone devise in the future can change the whole game.

Agreed on your point 1 smartphone will enhance learning curve for future as for 2nd point i believe the generation Y has a tech gap compare to generation Z.
We should not shy away or ban new technology that has the potential to enhance learning. I am a firm supporting of technology augmented knowledge for problem solving. However, we need to develop/facilitate responsible use of technology or it could hinder that which it was designed to enhance.

Agree, i would say it should only be allowed in higher education.
I suggest it be used across all educational settings. I do not think it should differ region-wise. Good practice can be universal and technology augmented knowledge is the future as the complexity of the challenges increases.

I am an advocate for using mobile phones in the classroom, but also outside of it. Students can use it to listen to podcast from their teacher for example. Why do you think there is a difference in usefulness between generation Y and Z?

For adult students, mobile ICT devices are an integrated part of their lives and identities. They also often use phones to have control over their life - children getting sick at childcare, etc, so it is almost violence to take smartphones away or demand them to be shut off completely.
Actually, ICTs within the classroom sabotages one of the ideas with a classroom: to keep learning-irrelevant information outside the room, permitting the teacher to organize work by focusing on one thing at a time. Now classroom walls are very information-leaky, both ways, due to very low friction of information.
This phenomenon that classrooms cannot keep out irrelevant information streams anylonger should not force us to take away phones (well perhaps for primary school) but better analyze when we should use the classroom or not. If we use it for lecturing, eell, it cant work as earlier. The learning content must be very stimulating and students very motivated for the classroom to still work as originally intended.
In the modern world where critical pedagogy asks teachers to energize the learners with knowledge and skills which they need to apply in real life situations blocking and/or forbidding the use of smartphone in academic contexts is illogical. These days social apps like Smartphones, Smartcars, Smartboards, Smarteverything are permeating our lives dramatically. As Bhavik Sarkhedi states, " In this world of smartphones, be a smart-app.” We have to accept change and try to cope with it. Blocking has never been effective.

the use of smartphone or tablets in classroom by students depends of various factors. students should be allowed (rather i will say smartphone should be made available for M-learning) if 1) the region has good access to wireless internet 2) school and students are economically affluent 3) faculties are competent enough in M-teaching learning. 4) facilities for blocking objectionable sites and unwanted internet access is available.
my personal opinion is M-learning should be used as an part of regular classroom learning that will enrich the classroom learning outcome
Possible and even necessary! The teacher should be able to direct the student to the path of using a smartphone for educational activities.
