Yes of-course. There is a lot of techniques to implement in face recognition projects. You can improve the accuracy of the recognition rate etc.

Face recognition is a very interesting topic, but it is being widely used already. Not that it is totally perfected, but there are many people working on it. Recognizing or classifying micro-expressions, which can give insight into emotional states and internal processes of the individual is a closely related, but more novel and challenging topic.

It is a very interesting topic specially in the 3D domain. If you managed to work on 3D data on your masters project. It will be a big big plus for you if you want to continue in academia or even industry!

Hello,

Face recognition is a very interesting and old topic. many of the researcher already shown an outstanding result. There are some vision based framework which already has that feature (like OpenCV).

This topic is good for Maters Thesis. But I will recommend you to try face recognition with Deep Learning. During that time, you could learn Deep Learning which will give you a big advantages in PhD.
