In your opinion, do you think during final year of Master’s Degree, students need to do a project in an industry or research lab with application orientation or theoretical research work?
A master degree, being a pre course to Ph D, students need to involve fully in research work as to prepare and equip them for a task ahead. Since most Ph D programs are research based, the last opportunity to learn before face with Ph D is master, therefore research work should be a must on which Ph D studies should be built on.
Research work in an idustry is always better than theoretical one as the first will find solutions to problems occuring in the industrial sector. These problems may become later crucial to the Country. This is common the Msc or PhD research work.
It seems good idea to do a project in a industry to get exposure to the student
but the focus of the project is "what the student learned in that period?" instead of checking the positive or negative results and give the grade or marks to them.
Most of the time either from student or teacher or from industry side the given project is not taken as seriously. Some students were under so much stress as lack of support from teacher (lack of project knowledge) or from industry (due to Investment of material and manpower) during their project.
My best opinion on this situation is when the below things are ok then it is best to give project to the student of Masters
Teacher : has a perfect knowledge for the project
Student: with good intrest in the working project
Industry: supportive and knowledgeable people who able to give time and all the resource hands free to the students.
Masters students are preferred to apply applied research leading to scientific publishing, as an input and experience in laboratory procedures and scientific writing
If the student is interested in pursuing a career in the industry it is better that they do a semester of practicum in the industry. This will give them valuable practical skills. On the other hand if the student wants to continue with PhD and has done theoretical or lab work to date let them continue doing so in the last semester.
I think that all research projects are important, and the practicable research for an industry also depends on theoretical points result from researches
In my department we teach four different senior design project courses that deal with actual off-campus projects taught by the people managing these projects. Graduate students should get exposure to real world experiences but we don’t require it.
Students may be given a choice to work on Industry research project or theoretical research project. Experience in Industry will help in understanding the real life research problems better and will add to their confidence. One year of Industry exposure or research lab exposure will be excellent .
I think a master degree would enable the student to learn both theoretical and practical techniques and new instrumentation, therefore a small project would evidently identifies the ability of the student in these aspects.
As per my opinion during final year of Master’s degree, students need to think first, masters project is related to industry i.e. useful for industry and second preference should be given for research lab and third preference for theoretical research work.
I think it depends on the vision of the students for his or her career and the objectives of the master degree program when it has been designed. If there is the possibility of chosing, the student should choose either option while taking into account how he or she sees himself or herself working after graduating. If the master degree program in its design has specific objectives for its students, the options should match these objectives and preferences would be given under these circumstances (industry project? research lab? theoritical research?).
