Average number of authors in multi authored papers are increasing rapidly. There are reasons of course. However, often this results in unfair distribution of credits among the authors. One possible way to minimise the concern is to categorize the authors and soecify their roles in the production of a paper. Nobody cares with the order of authors on a paper. Only the first one, the last one, and the total number of authors are somewhat interesting. Anyway, all the authors get the same credit in scopus, google scholar, and researchgate, also the perception of the middle ones contribution are the same (nobody cares). It is rather an internal dispute among the scientists on the paper, only the group inside interested in these accolades and compare each others' p...s length.
Although i agree with the above response that we should not care much, the questionnaire is really helpful in understanding the perceptions of researchers and their current practices. Great Work.

In fact, you might have noticed that, whether we care or not, the reality is fair distribution of credits among the authors based on the actual contribution is truly lacking. That is why, everyone gets same/equal share no matter what is their contribution. We have earlier proposed a mechanism to assign author's contribution more quantitatively. As a continuation of that work, we are planning to propose author categorization as well. I believe this will be beneficial in near future.
I shall appreciate your feedback in the questionnaire, if your time and interest permits. If possible please share with your colleagues as well and invite them for their feedback. I need a large feedback to view the global perspective on the issue.
