If you see the logo used by the very renowned publishers Elsevier, there is a tree, a man standing beneath the tree and two words Non Solus. Anybody, please let explain the logo in short.

Additionally, "Non Solus" reminds me on "We read to know we are not alone."; I know it from the movie "Shadowlands" but don't know if an older source exists, or if there is even a connection to the Elsevier motto.

Non solus means 'not alone', and probably refers to the necessary bond between scholars and publishers.
It looks like people do not like to answer certain questions. It is funny and confusing, isn't it? I myself had this question in mind though never shared to anyone. Thank you for sharing this question. I was a reviewer for some time for Elsevier, just to say I was connected somehow to have a chance to gaze at the mark of the tree. I tried to refer what it means but you will not get much except the family history that Isaac Elzevir used this mark in 1580 for small Dutch publishing house. you can find this from their own sit on Elsevier. There is no clear information on the internet what the tree or the man or the written word means (Non solus) except its translation which means "Not Alone".
Here is what I think it is. From the picture, it is very clear that the man in the tree is the first man Adam as written in the Bible. He is shown eating something and obviously he is eating the fruit he and Eve are forbidden to eat. In this picture (on Elsevier website), what we see is a vine but the original picture in the Library of Congress clearly shows it is a snake, not a vine twig. It is now clear that the devil made Eve eat the forbidden fruit, may be apple, and then Adam. Adam was the target. Adam represents humanity. On the bible in Genesis chapter 3 gives enough information on how the devil cheated Eve saying she would come to possess knowledge and wisdom. They ate and humanity died that day. This is still considered as victory by Satan and his followers. What you see on the picture is just that, the devil saying “Non solus” or Not alone for himself and his followers after the fall of humanity. I do believe the Isaac Elsevir well aware of his mark which stands saying the devil he is not alone by doing what they do. What do they do? Telling the world to worship knowledge in every field, deciding who has it and so forth. I devil’s approach for today’s humanity is the same, it never changed. Famous publication in medical and evolution and many others keep confirming God doesn’t exist, God is a jock and people like me keep laughing knowing all about it.
