As research on systems for drone delivery of small packages continue, a possible urban asset to successfully leverage is the network of natural and man-made drainage in metro areas. This inventory would include streams, waterways, canals, gullies, rivers. Has there been any empirical work been done on utilising these networks for commercial delivery of packages by drones.
Following up Sev's response, Amazon has already tested it's drones and are actively working in the California region, but as of now, they are utilizing the airspace.
The use of waterways and drainage is being researched in the New York area. The reason behind this is that the ancient water system pipes have not been operational since years, and it was cheaper to construct new ones on top of the older ones to cater to New York's needs instead of actually demolishing the older ones. Unfortunately, I am unable to find the article where I read this. If I do, I shall post it as soon as possible.
