This question is something that is becoming more and more popular in the Jamaican context. AI is now being used as a tool to pollute democracy, teaching, and learning as people are using AI for unscrupulous reasons.
When I read education we were required to pass a subject called ‘writing student performance objectives’. Writing cognitive and psychomotor performance objectives was not very difficult if you knew your primary subject, however the teaching and testing of affective learning is another kettle of fish entirely. I suspect that AI would have little trouble with cognitive and psychomotor education. Affective learning on the other hand is something I believe AI – by that I mean the algorithms and coding which entail the AI’s capabilities – is incapable of. That would require the AI program to predict all possible exceptions to standard protocols as living teachers are required to do in order to sense what suits the individual living student. When AI acquires empathy and compassion (I would very much like to view the code for those functions) then we may be able to replace a living teacher with, effectively, a living AI.
I think that artificial intelligence (AI) will be one of the most important skills that a student should possess, because it reduces the effort and time spent on research. Besides, the results of AI are almost accurate and specific. In my opinion, the fundamentals of AI should be taught starting from the teens to empower them and make them ready to keep up and deal with the differences and developments, systematically.
AI in education has the potential to greatly influence students' reasoning skills. By leveraging AI tools and technologies, educators can create personalized learning experiences, offer immediate feedback, and provide adaptive instruction tailored to individual student needs. These capabilities can enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
To effectively teach critical skills in the context of AI in education, here are some suggestions:
Emphasize critical thinking: Encourage students to ask questions, analyze information, evaluate evidence, and consider multiple perspectives. Teach them how to apply logical reasoning and evidence-based decision-making.
Foster creativity: AI can provide answers and solutions, but it's essential to foster students' creativity by encouraging open-ended projects, problem-solving activities, and opportunities for innovation. Encourage students to think creatively and find unique approaches to challenges.
Teach data literacy: Develop students' ability to understand, interpret, and evaluate data. Teach them how to gather, analyze, and draw meaningful conclusions from data. This includes understanding statistical concepts, data visualization, and the ethical implications of data use.
Cultivate collaboration: Collaboration is crucial in the AI-driven world. Encourage group work, teamwork, and cooperative learning experiences. Foster skills like effective communication, active listening, and respectful collaboration to prepare students for real-world scenarios.
Address ethical considerations: Discuss the ethical implications and challenges associated with AI, including bias, privacy, and algorithmic decision-making. Encourage students to critically evaluate the ethical dimensions of AI applications and promote responsible use of technology.
Encourage problem-based learning: Incorporate real-world problems and challenges that require students to think critically, reason logically, and apply their knowledge. Problem-based learning promotes active engagement and helps students develop transferable skills.
Incorporate AI technologies: Integrate AI technologies into the classroom to enhance learning experiences. This could include using AI-based tools for data analysis, virtual simulations, adaptive learning platforms, and intelligent tutoring systems.
Lifelong learning: Teach students that learning is a continuous process. Help them develop a growth mindset and emphasize the importance of ongoing skill development and adaptation to changing technologies.
