There is great synergy between STEM and Sustainability. I am interested in lesson plans or activities that focus on sustainability and have the potential to support the development of STEM inquiry skills when working with data.
Hi Noleine. As I'm sure you are aware, Sustainability is one of the cross-curricular focus areas for the Australian Curriculum. Data collection in the Skills and inquiry content descriptors. There may be some value trolling through those if you haven't already done so. This is the URL to the latest version; http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/humanities-and-social-sciences/hass/curriculum/f-10?layout=2#page=5 . Also the Work Samples for Geography in Version 7.5 of the curriculum contain a unit on Climate. It may be of use; http://www.acara.edu.au/curriculum/worksamples/Year_5_Geography_Portfolio.pdf . Some of the other work samples may be of interest as well.
Lastly, the GeoSpace site is certainly worth a visit. It was produced by the Geography Teachers Association to support Australian Curriculum: Geography. It contains some excellent units of work that you might be able to use or adapt. I'd recommend that you visit the Core Units in particular; http://www.geogspace.edu.au/ .
Have you looked into any citizen science projects? There are loads around Australia that have developed curriculum materials so that students can collect and analyse data (and more!). A good place to start is to look up the Australian Citizen Science Association (citizenscience.org.au).
Also, the Atlas of Living Australia has a project finder on their website.
Your university has some active citizen science projects, too, so it might be worth asking around (see the folks at IMAS).
A great activity is to let students calculate their own ecological footprint. Students can analyse different topics related to sustainability and further reflect on the results of the footprint calculation. Several online tools are available for that purpose, see websites below. I also provide an article focusing on the application of ecological footprint analysis in higher education, which was published in Ecological Indicators.
Very nice. Congratulations, Noleine Fitzallen. I am a maths educator I work as a professor at the Faculty of Education and I use drama in mathematics teaching. I believe that STEM activities are more fun, willing and sustainable with Drama and I am working on it.
