There are many methods for designing heavy airplanes, like the "rosckam method" or the "raymer method".
Is there any for designing aerial vehicles that weigh less than 3kg? I've heard names like "energy method" or "mtinger method" but I didn't find any articles of them.
Yes, we have some methods for design micro aerial vehicle(MAV). A good reference for design this category is energy method or Mattingly method.if you search in web I think u can find proper papers.
3 Kilograms is right in the range of model aircraft. There are at least two on the market, (1) the Esprit Fascination, with a wingspan of 3.6 metres, and a weight of 3.18 kg (http://www.espritmodel.com/fascination-3-6c-f5j-arc-arf.aspx), and (2) the Nimbus 3.6S/E, with a 3.6 meter wingspan, and weight of 2.95 kg.(www.espritmodel.com/nimbus-3-6s-e-arf.aspx). There are two books on model aircraft, (1) "Model Aircraft Aerodynamics", by Martin Simons, which is not a design manual, but gives the aerodynamics one needs to know to design an aircraft of this size , e.g. which airfoil should one choose depending on what the mission of the aircraft is, and (2) "Model Aircraft Design and Performance", by Chevalier H.L. Challenge Engineering Inc. PO Box 67, New Baden, TX 77870, USA, 1993.
