Aspen hysys is one of the widely used plant simulation tool where you can do dynamic as well as steady state simulations. COMSOL or ANSYS employed for the simulation and design of specific component /system
The mechanistic difference between them is that COMSOL models Transport Phenomena, while ASPEN is based on Thermodynamic relationships. As far as applications, ASPEN simulates very specific chemical plant equipment, while COMSOL will simulate whatever physical system you set up: ranging from fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transport, electricity and magnetism, mechanical deformation of materials... and all of these could depend on each other. You will need to draw the geometry, choose the physics, set up the boundary conditions, etc. With ASPEN the equipment is already predetermined: for example, you will select a "CONDENSER" from a list of available equipment, choose what temperature it is operating at and what fluid goes into it. ASPEN won't provide any details about whats actually happening inside of the equipment (e.g. information about the flow or the temperature fields established inside). Instead, you just tell it what goes in, and it will tell you what comes out :)
