I am looking for commercial wireless heart sensing devices that provide real time access to raw data stream (i.e. via bluetooth). Most devices I know (i.e. fitbit, tom tom etc) are for the fitness market but do not allow accessing data.

Andrea: I am not familiar with the heart monitor device you are making an inquiry about. However, I believe that Dr. Mark Wiederhold, whom you know well, might be able to answer your question. Also, several years ago, I was consulting on a project with Charles "Charlie" Shaw, who at the time was employed by General Dynamics. The proposal was to remotely monitor the activities of patients in their "hospital" rooms including Breaths Per Minute and Heart Rate. The planned focus for this project was to monitor quality of life of patients & their compliance with Physical Therapy at Naval Medical Center San Diego. In addition to the above options I would say any smartwatch (e.g. moto 360, huawei watch; anyone with a heart rate sensor) running android wear would fit your requirement. The added benefit is that any apps you build (for realtime biofeedback for example) are already within a very mature, google built eco system.

As mentioned before, sensors such as the Empatica provide some raw data (E.g. raw PPG), although the cost is very high (around $ 1700 US). Moreover, smartwatches such as the Moto360 or the LG G Watch R can be programmed to provide HR data. However, you should consider that this is preprocessed data (from manufacturers) and we just have access to the processed data (not the raw PPG). Therefore, if you wanted to make things such as Heart Rate Variability analysis, this approach is not highly accurate. I have been working with the Polar Chest Band (H7) and it seems that we can access both HR and RR-interval data with an Android app (currently working in an APK to extend it in our PhysioVR framework).

Hi Andrea. There is a paper that compares Polar H7, PPG (from phone-cameras) and ECG. Results showed that the technical error of estimate (TEE) was acceptable for PPG and Polar H7 once compared with the gold standard (ECG).
