Divide into four parts: 1) Review the articles, theses, papers related to independent variable, 2) Review the material related to dependent variable, 3) Review the material related to the relationship studies between both variables, 4) Summarize the review by identifying the gaps in the previous research you would want to cover, or findings you would want to build on; also identify the base model or article you would like to adopt, if it is fitting your research. .
Read the book, then wright on one page ten things you liked most, then on the second page write ten things that you grossly disliked in that book, then make up an idea over which you can organize your data and knowledge.
Nice Q@A many thanks dear Kamila Ghidouche ait-yahia
First thing first one needs to know the topic in depth and aware of the relevant papers so far. Secondly, during and after writing the paper you need to get advises from your peers and seniors.
I personally tend to not to publish review type pieces as very much time consuming, instead i focus on original articles and comment/ opinion type pieces.
However, if you have a strong desire to publish review type piece, go for it. Readers in your field would enjoy it.

There are several steps which may be followed to write a good literature review, which may be
1. Set objectives for your research
2. Formulate Questions that have to be answered
3. Search literature on the basis of your questions
4. Read thoroughly the papers you are interested in
5. Make notes for each paper separately
6. Compile it on the basis of questions you have formulated
7. Write up with mention of the authors (i.e. papers) in a flow of your topic. Never disturb the flow of your topic. If a paper covers more than one topic, describe it at all appropriate places.
8. Summarize the findings of several papers on on a particular topic at the end of sections.
9. Summary at the end of the paper should include all necessary trends in findings of the research paper.
To write a review of the literature, it is necessary to identify the studied aspects of the problem you are interested in, on the basis of what sources the work of your predecessors was written, what methods and methodology they used, and what conclusions they reached. Based on this, it is possible to identify which aspects have not yet been studied and what are the prospects for studying this problem.

First, identify a strategy for the review that suits your topic; historical, thematic or based on seminal articles. Follow a logical coherent order in presenting your discussion leading the reader from the broad to the narrow focus you aim for, but avoid redundancy or incomplete thoughts. Synthesizing a discussion one skill that is seldom taught but you have to practice it yourself through reading reviews by expert researchers. Revise your work critically as an outsider or have an expert to comment.
There are quite number of published work related to this question to guide you on how to write a fit literature review. All are useful to be read. Overall, its up to the topic you are investigating or searching for and how the literature is going to be organised in a way that suits the academic style, the university' requirements and meet your satisfaction .
A structured literature review (SLR) in Management and Organization was defined by Tranfield in British Journal of Management. He goes into detail about how to scope the journals and selection for inclusion/exclusion. It is important as it helps you think about your contribution to knowledges.....
If you are writing the literature review section of a dissertation or research paper, you will search for literature related to your research problem and questions. This is the first step in understanding the state of knowledge on your topic before you begin your own research.
If you are writing a literature review as a stand-alone assignment, you will have to choose a focus and develop a central question to direct your search. Unlike a dissertation research question, this question has to be answerable without collecting or generating new data. You should be able to answer it based only on a review of existing publications.
Great to share good insights from different countries... important to stress that Global North knowledges have been dominant, but that many institutions in the Global South are developing new knowledges relevant to own histories and cultures. I want to support this process of Decolonization...
- First collecting any and all documents on the topic I am reviewing.
- I name the files according to their chronological appearence in this way: year(volume)pages, exemple: 2019(08)1234-1235.
- after putting the plan or content of the review, titles and subtitles, I start reading the abstract and dispatching them in files according to the content of the review.
- once the previous part is achieved, I start reading each document, taking notes, and inserting them in the specified parts of the review.
It is very important we value the academies in developing and transition economies...we should be looking South and East....with Trump as leader he is pushing Global North research and ignoring the vast intellectual abilities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. One thing that is a weakness with literature reviews, for example leadership, the discussion focuses on western models, mainly USA, yet there are many studies of leadership In the ME, many Arabic, but they provide important historical and social contexts of leadership. As a PhD examiner and a reviewer for many journals it is sad to see the lit review in narrow, based on western assumptions and values
For me, i organize the literature into sub-sections based on the topic. Then i start with them section by section. The most important point for me that makes my writing style (as i think) good is using references only from highly prestigious journals in the field e.g., 4* or 3* ABS rating.
The politics of journal rankings!! The ABS list is one list, but business, unlike, economics, geography classified, created hiearchies and following a strategy of exclusion with new 4* ....there are other good journals, and the Global North is being challenged by new publishers,....you should also consider relevant Arab writings. So many ABS journals are based on US data...how can we advance Arab knowledge, Asian, African without recourse to own cultures, histories
This is the way I work, after I have started reading some papers according to the topic of research, I use the "reference section/bibliography" to search for relevant papers in this topic and I start to build my documentation.
I organise the papers (and other types of documents) into different folders naming them according to the place where I am going to use them (Variables; results discussion; introduction;...etc). The documents are named with the author name and year of publication [For example: Ward (1974) Child_socialisation ] , that's very helpful to find the papers quickly.
Then, I start reading and summing up the most important ideas in each document, one instrument that I find extremely helpful is the usage of some qualitative softwares, for me I'm using MaxQda, it assists the researcher in organising his/her literature review process,. It works the same way than when you code your qualitative data, using memoing options, retrieval options and even coding options ...etc.
The memos you write are summaries (notes) of the paper but also can contain your reflection about the topic, and help in building research questions and identifying any gap in the literature.
I am a novice in using this type of software, I am just learning but I know that we can make a great work with that.
Sometime back I have expressed my views regarding the subject under review for which I submit herewith for your perusal
Review of literature also to say the publication of books remain very essence for imparting information for the knowledge in certain cases it helps for the guideline for the readers in their interested reading matter .
Thank you Rohit Manilal Parikh Souad Djedi Beverly Dawn Metcalfe Tamer Mohammad Koburtay Abdelkader BOUAZIZ for taking time to share your working method, I'm sure that it will be very useful for my further papers. thank you for following Mrs Ferhan
I want to advocate Decolonization. Let's get rid of first/third world binaries and create knowledges premised on rootedness, location, situatedness, often used by feminist, post-colonial and geography writers....I go between the global south and global North so I see power relations, classed, racialized, and gendered knowledge that positions people and institutions in various hiearchies...when we talk of opening up dialogue and debate it saddens me privileging identities, states, institutions is embedded in thinking/logic...disconnect and reorientalize....
Of course there are other ranking lists, journals etc with a very high quality rather than ABS. No doubt of this!!!
I just gave ABS as an example.
Also i suggest referring to strong journals just to improve the writing style (academic style), this does not mean excluding others' work. I am completely with you, we "should consider relevant Arab writings", as am one of them :)
The first step is to use simple language. Second, use modern references and content start with the problem and then the user to treat it and then explain the details
The most important advice is to have a broad knowledge of the literature related to the subject of the research. Then we must determine the objective of the article and determine the outline through which we can achieve this goal and also rely on the latest literature to cover the topic
Literature review,.....not an easy task, so many advises, all are helpful;.......
what I learned through writing literature review, as a beginner, when I saw my literature review after four or five months, it was like.....it was not so good......but that novice attempt made me realize that headings helped me, later I managed them more crisply,...
So start writing, under headings.......as many as possible and then arrange them logically as per topic requirements, writing literature review is unique, individualized process, everyone can have its own style and with the passage of time, it gets better.
If it is for a research paper, then work out your results and discussion first. Once you know your conclusions then accordingly write the literature review. Or else like many if you start the literature review first you may write a bulk of information that may not be specific to your topics
if it is about your thesis, then look well and understand clearly your objectives. If objectives are clear then you will write a Lit review specific to your project.
