since google docs track changes feature gives you the whole changes from the beginning until the end day by day. I am just curious, if this feature has been used as part of any research? It can be progress of a student in writing, development of understanding any topic?

That sounds a great idea. I think we can use google docs tracking change data as parameter for students' activity or students' engagement within a group or a learning community. In this case, we need an API to get google docs tracking change data to be read in our system. I need a review for the API whether this already exist.

we did. We are using the drive monitor and extract the relevant information using spread selectors:

We did use the tool to monitor if students have reviewed other students work and we have monitored students overall activity as well. The reports are only giving an indication, when students recognize that they are monitored, they tend to open, type and close documents.
We have worked out additional parameters to judge reviewing quality because of that in our case (Scientific review in section collaborative writing):
number of comments, relevance (found issues), communication quality.
Hi, the first problem I see is how you can detect the “understanding participants progression”. It’s not easy because the knowledge develops internally and, probably, in a different way for each student. If you consider Ausubel’s theory about significative learning, it’s necessary to associate the new with the previous information and it (the previous information) varies from one student to other. Even if you increase the amount of participation (or any other statistics you will observe) during the elaboration of the document, it’s not garanteed that all students will obtain a similar or better understanding progression.
Finally, you have three kind of problems: 1)how you measure the “understanding participants progression”; 2)what you will analyse in “google docs tracking”; and 3)how you can correlate (1) with (2). I’m sure if really get good results, you’ll have a impressive research.
I used google docs for questionary of the my Master's research for specialists to answer. But I don't know about this topic that you is asking.I think it sounds like a good idea.

As for me, this is a user friendly online collaborative tool that allows me to use it to promote group work and peer editing & it's quite a useful way to collaborate within the PLCs in schools.
