I have some experience in follicular dynamic in cattle. I want to work on follicular dynamic in goat. Do you have any experience on it?
Which kind of probe I have to use for follicular examination in goats?
Which way is good for imagination i.e. trans-abdominal, vaginal or rectal? It is said that best way is trans-rectal imagination. However, I know that trans-rectal imagination is more difficult way compared with trans-vaginal or abdominal in spite of good view of ovarium .
It is easy to obtain standard view of ovarium in cattle for each day. However, in goat how can I provide standard view of ovarium. Because, as you know ovarium mapping is needed standard ovarian posture. In cattle it looks like easy with rectal palpation of ovarium. How can I provide same ovarian (posture) view in day by day?
Can you share your experience about ultra-sonografic (US) imagination of goat ovarium?

I don't think you really need to palpate the ovaries while scanning. Although I haven't done any scanning in goats, I would try using the same bovine trans-rectal probe with some modifications so that it can be used as a hand-held probe. This can easily be done by fixing the probe with a thin rod using duct-tape.
While scanning cattle ovaries I used to draw a corresponding ovarian map on the paper and saved the image in a memory stick. I used a freely available software "ImageJ" for measuring the structures. By doing this way saved heaps of time in the farm and I was able to scan a large number of cows more efficiently.
Hi Umut, I do not with follicular dynamics in goat but in ewes, I think not greatly differ. Trans-rectal approach is the best approach. You may need a prob-connector. Also, it works without connector, but you need to directed the probe with your index finger, it is working very good. 6 to 8 MHz is excellent to examination. You find the ovaries usually just anterior to the urinary bladder, move with probe a little right and left just anterior to the UB. Presence of follicle makes easy to find the ovaries.

AT UTAD we are used to follow small ruminant (sheep and goat) follicular dynamics with US. We use a transrectal approach and a probe with fixed "bastonet" similar to a prostatic probe.. My colleague Sandra Sacoto is our expert. you can reach her by the email [email protected]

We used human prostate probe with ALOKA ultrasound machine for ovarian scan in goats many times. It was wonderful experience.
We use an Aloka 500 ultrasound machine with a prostate transducer working at 7.5 Mhz. You must introduce about 10-15 cm of the probe on the rectus (it depends of the animal adult or young). You must find the urninary bladder and the ovaries and uterus usually is near the urinary bladder. You must move the probe right and left slowly and even up and down the probe on the rectus. The best period to learn and practice is during the breeding season because the ovaries are larger. You can find larges follicles that they are as large black holes on the ovary and corpus luteum that they are as a volcano or "donut".

Thank you all who answer my question. Your answers contain very useful information for me. I want to especially learn how we can be mapping ovarium and structure of ovarium (i.e. follicular diameter etc.) in goat, can you say that mapping of follicles is difficult compared with cattle? I am worried about missing the follicles or wrong determination of diameters of follices in goats.

Although we haven’t ultrasound scanned goats, we have successfully scanned sheep daily and mapped the ovary/follicles to determine follicular dynamics. We used an Aloka SSD900 with a trans-rectal 7.5MHz linear array probe and attached a hard plastic sleeve (approx. 20cm) around the probe and down the cord to make the probe more rigid. We scanned the sheep rectally with the sheep restrained in cradles. The follicles seen were mapped on paper, but the whole scan was also recorded on a DVD recorder for further analysis using a video editing programme – still images can be taken from this for a more accurate diameter measurement.
The probe we use is as per the attached picture, and we introduce approximately 30- 40 ml of lubricant before inserting the probe. We have also scanned every 8 hours during early pregnancy resulting in no pregnancy loss.
