Yes, for me it was quite challenging but I remember how my mentor (Dr.@gulzarshah) guided me and encouraged me to work and appreciate my efforts...

I feel that I have been restrained by cartel ans vested interests in my research area. They publish lots of similarly structured research outcomes, delivering same implications. I proposed a new idea and concept to the phenomenon of interest, but I often fell into a deep slump (by unreasonable rejections of the journals), and above all, lost the will to bull my way to present my work to the science community. I am first working hard to publish a lot (more than three times compared to the other same-level scholars) in top journals (and even low profile journals in case that timing matters). And I am doing my best to inform the science community who I am and what my program of research is.

I agree with this opinion that there are a lot of restrictions and constraints that encounter a researcher when choosing a research topic. One of these restrictions is the time constraint.

Well Prof Shah , my restriction started when I was 15 !!! Once I took science that is it no looking back , I had to hone my math and science skills , get into Engineering and teach in the same field and end up knowing nothing except Electronics and Communication :)

I did take a chance but walked into wrong people and wrong group so lesson learned a hard way !!!!!!!! and I regret ...

Now, that I know specialization is what we strive to achieve , I do not regret being restricted :)

Some times, if the topic is very sensitive

Yes, from time to time my own scientific interests have to be linked with the research conducted at the institute. However, it is almost always possible to find a compromise solution.

It took me ages to discover, frame and work out my principal research and several universities considered it far too wide in scope. I stubbornly persevered. Negotiations took 6 months. Now I do what I want.

perhaps i feel research is the state of mind. initially we go through several things where we finds what is required and what is not. Finally things get better where we come to rest for a specific topic or a problem and the next important battle statrts to solve that problems.

i am completely agree with the point put forward by Stanley Wilkin that he stubbornly persevered things. research has to be takled in the same manner.

When I started as a PhD student, my division had been granted funding for a specific project. So for my first years, I need to fulfil the things stated in the project plan. However, it has been possible do some additional articles in addition to the ones stated in the project plan.

For the last years of my PhD, we will need to apply for more funding. I study energy efficiency in the aluminium industry and its supply chains. I wanted to continue on that topic to have a clear topic for my thesis and had a couple of ideas on what to study. These were discussed with representatives from the Swedish aluminium industry since they would be the study objects in my research. I was more keen on one of ideas. However, the other idea was chosen since the representatives were more interested in that idea and it would be a bit easier to conduct.

Another thing is that I have had to postpone some articles that I wanted to write due to time constraints.

I don't not feel constrained when it comes to choosing a research topic.

Sure I am. And I guess everybody else has the same restriction. Research topic is restricted by the facility available in your lab, funding and grants, and sometimes your institute plans.

My self imposed restrictions other than the grant funding are that I want to have my research answer a question that will help public health practice agencies and must contribute to ecidence base to fill serious gaps.

Yes I am very restricted to do theoretical research in applied Mathematics. Some factors are

1. I do not know many mathematical/statistical techniques. (this is my academic restriction).

2. I have financial restrictions in purchasing software etc.

3. Time restrictions.

Research is often restricted by the data availability and your technical skills (software, make wortflow, select useful algorithms etc.)
