Vacations are not waste of time! Taking a few weeks of vacation per year not only make us healthier and happier, but also makes us more energized when we are back to work.
I think that taking well deserved vacations makes us more productive. We do not want to burnt out!
I am glad to read that some of you have vacations. But I have little, and learn to manage on public holidays, to de-stress. We had a boss who said 'there are some who do their research till they forget their teaching duties'. So, to keep a clear conscience, I do my research writing etc after office hours, on alternate weekends, and during the 5 weeks of 'vacations'. (It's not just work of course, but the many activities to be healthy physically and spiritually; that consume vacations.)
I know how important it is to go on true vacation but unfortunately I haven't been able to do it. But even when I do it, a reading in the morning or evening will be never forgotten.
Hi Darko and Vilemar, are we in the same condition? When I was young, I learned that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy; and makes me a dull girl...
Fortunately I have an excellent time at home. I have a wonderful wife, a son who is married and 3 dogs who believe they are human. I do what I like with people I love. So, vacation is just because I believe my body deserves it. My mind is in a big and eternal party.
We're over-worked, over-stressed, but cannot enjoy a vacation because of serious work obligations. With this on mind, can we have a vacation? Yes, we can. Can we enjoy it? That is another story in itself!
Hello @Arar, perhaps many of us have been trained or conditioned to work willingly; 'Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might'. And we just make do without vacations. Indeed holidays are for doing house improvements, gardening, some sewing and keep fit exercises that I thoroughly enjoy.
@Sardar, I think my vacations are full with carried over work and activities, but still enjoyable.
I made a phrase: "play to play, work to work, not play and work." What I mean is simply we should not mix up things. So when I am not at work, I should not be locked into my regular routine, I should take a mental break
You will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory. Enjoy the little things in life....., for one day you will look back and realize they were the big things.
"Unfortunately yes. By taking care of so many students and helping my colleagues I have but to care the work with me during my trip. Not trying to say I am important but I have to do so."
For many tenured professors, vocation means vacation. Hence, taking work on vacation signifies simply transporting the greater vacation to the lesser one. In fact, the pleasure of work can enhance the delight of leisure. I recall, for example, taking a novel by Colombian poet José Asunción Silva to the beach with me at San Juan, Puerto Rico, because I was going to teach the work during a graduate course on my return. The tropical setting enhanced the reading experience, and the enjoyable reading embellished the experience of sunbathing and swimming.
Dear @Sardar, communications' tools are now part of our daily life; therefore, work related material flow to you whenever, whatever, and wherever you are, during vacations or at home.
@Ouyang et al. yesterday was Christmas eve, but I couldn't get a day off, because it's hard to replace classes, when we consider the number of contact hours of our students. So I was allowed to go off after my classes,1 pm. Today, after Christmas worship, I drove back to college. Heavy rains are upon us, recently in some states 10 inches of rain in 24 hours, and floods in those states! See http://floodlist.com/tag/malaysia
@Sardar, you can see that for some of us a holiday or vacation doesn't mean having nothing to do! Allow me to share this pic of Christmas presentation this morning. Thanks.
Dear @Sardar, I do not wish to mix work and vacations. But, sometimes if hard need appears for, I must do it and I am not happy for, especially my family!
The same for me i do not mix vacations and work, only when there is a priority to meet with some deadlines. However reading good books during holidays is a great pleasure
I used to read and write. During my practice on one basic and 3 part-time jobs there are a lot of new and creative ideas appear in my head.Very often I have a limit of time to write- it's my favorite occupation and I'm waiting for vacations or holidays to write a new research, article, poem or scenario. It's the best time for analyzing all the information, which I have accumulated during my working.Communication with my family and friends is relaxation and pleasure after work.
Vacations are usually vacations. I try to live them without working prolems. However, in my case the improvvise worsening of a patient as well as the urgency of sending corrected proofs of a paper may be a reason for a little break.
Some people like me do not find time for any long vacation. However, I shall answer the query!
1) Removable hard-disk (zip-drive or flash-drive) is very useful for carrying large data. These days 1-TB flash drive is available, and one can carry huge data with it.
2) Google Drive is also very useful for storing your files and working with them anywhere, but this needs good internet access.
3) Laptops are meant for carrying all your data. As Wi-Fi access is provided at many places around the world, you can work with your data using Laptop and transmit to friends / office, using Wi-Fi internet facility.
Yes, I do carry with me pen drives and materials related with for reading during journey . or vacations at home. Even in dreams, I used to discuss the subject matter with my very old colleagues ( not at all related with me now). I found it very useful to me.
I just went through all the replies - Kamal, Krishnan & others. Yes, some holiday break or vacation will be helpful in recharging our batteries. Though I don't get time for long vacation, I use my Conference visits to take little break from regular work. I liked my last few visits to Tunisia and Malaysia. I hope to meet some RG people in some academic conferences in the near future. Thank you!
I agree Conference visits give a kind of break from routines. Its really a rejoice to see and interact with fellow researchers. I missed my trip to vietnam last month but was happy to have done visit to Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Jeili, Khota Bahru few months ago & Indonesia (universiti Bengkulu) again a few more months before. Both these recent trips had a halt and stay in Singapore to shop and travel along with family.
In all these visits the emails had to be attended and urgent calls to be answered.
Yes I do carry work in vacations. In fact many important work I've done was on vacation time! One can combine pleasure and enjoyment of vacations with useful and pleasurable work !
I think most of us carry work and research tasks also in vacations. The explanation may be that this work is not merely an ordinary work item but also a source of happiness which has been organically built into our life.
Dear friends, happy 2015. Keep doing what makes you happy and productive. Have working holidays or complete rest during vacations, it's your right! (For some people, vacations were rather stressful. But perhaps they will remember it all the more :))
'Malaysian authorities launched a major rescue operation on Wednesday (Dec 24) to evacuate tourists stranded at a resort by heavy monsoon flooding that has forced tens of thousands of residents to abandon their homes.'
What a sad story and yet what a great news that the authorities were able to take action before worse things happened. I hope this suffering of the people out of their homes may be compensated by a long, healthy and prosperous life for them all.
Dear Vilemar and all, thanks for your kind concern for my country and my people. Our December floods always coincide with school holidays. About 100 000 persons evacuated, all are very sad and stressed. I attach some links.
Dear @Miranda, thank you for the reports about floods in Malaysia; I think that more research should be carried out in these fields to prevent bad impacts on people and nature.
Agreed to Prof. Abedallah, proper research should be held away to prevent flood hazards. @Dear Miranda hopes the state of affairs in your country changes and brings good time for you & the people of your state.
Dear friends @Sardar, Abedallah and all, thanks. Our annual floods normally occur in December when schools have 5 weeks of holidays. Schools and community halls are used to place evacuees.
Suddenly this morning, we got even more bad news. An Airasia plane belonging to Malaysia, travelling from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore, lost contact. It's about 7 hours or so, not a word is heard. Many Indonesians on board, but the crew is likely Malaysian. (Some of you who know us or have visited or studied in our country will truly sympathize...)
Yes sad news coming out AirAsia flight QZ8501 with 155 passengers on board from Indonesia to Singapore missing, I pray and hope for the safe return of the flight.
I really would like to understand why such catastrophies happen and most importantly that we may avoid them or at least diminish the suffering of this people. I know it is difficult to happen anywhere in the world but if people decided to invite some of those victims for their parties or if they left the tons of food and drinks for those today homeless people. The suffering of the families of QZ8501 flight is even more painful. We are so far from developed beings! We have so much to grow to be truly happy people! Miranda not only for being Malaysian, we ca see you would be deeply touched by those facts if they happened in other places. You have brought to our discussions that humanized flavor. Be strong! I wish those families their heart may be comforted. There is not much sense to blame one person now, one leader. Your country will have to create strict rules to accomodate the victims of the floods which are expected for every year. The accident with the plane deserves security proceedures but I believe that Malaysia follows world's standards. A happy 2015 for thise people who may be not able to see any reason to laugh today. I appologize to Dr Sardar for this long side comment.
Dear Vilemar, it's confirmed that the airbus belongs to the Indonesian branch of Airasia, so it's crew may be all Indonesians. But we are all concerned, just as when similar incidents occurred in Iran, Brazil and other places. Thanks Vilemar, it's a lot easier to suffer when we have a clear conscience.
The vacation time provided reflects the social values, defines the success, personal worth and include taking little time away from work - is a company policy.
However in addition to all this, the employee is so habituated (conditioned) to see emails and office correspondences, which can never make their day completed (thoughts would still be away even on vacation).
