Considering that video recordings took place in a home based environment. Do you believe that skin detection could actually segment human persons from background objects with similar colour (e.g. a skin colored closet, or table)? Could anyone recommend a relevant publication?
I think this idea is not going to work accurately for human action recognition.
For action recognition, to segment out the human from the scene silhouette based approaches are much better. Only skin detection will give you information about face, hands only...... at the same time it will create ambiguity with background objects...
NO. If u want skin detection in any way, it will be done using texture analysis and that will require very high processing as the image has to be zoomed alot to extract the texture.
active contours can be used for extraction of humans from background. They make a snake like model and the snake moves along if u r doing video processing.
I had a tough controversy with a professor about this subject in a recent Artificial Intelligence conference and his persistence on skin detection robustness lead me to search for answers. From my point of view, skin detection cannot lead to precise recognition results when used alone for soving human action recognition. However, the one million dollar question is if this technique could be used as an enhancer on the performance if combined with a background/foreground segmentation (ie GMM background substraction) or motion segmentator (ie. silhouttes, activity areas) alg. ??

I dont think that skin detection going to play a major role in human action recognition..... because skin detection can only be used like in face detection like or face tracking options.... but it cant be efficiently used in action recognition......... If u r using skin detection for FG/BG extraction then its fine, but u will only extract the human being as a FG but no action recognition using skin detection in my opinion...
it is possible using Background and fore ground Substraction method....
To use skin detection as an enhancer depends on the application. It can be used very well in areas where we have a background with no colour as that of skin. For this type of application, the detection is made easy by skin detection provided that a considerable amount of skin is visible for detection. For a little more complex part, as I already said, texture analysis has to be used. For clutter backgrounds, skin detection doesn't seems to be a good idea as itself may lead to erroneous results which becomes another task for implementation and hence output can be compromised.
