In my opinion, many systems after being released or rejected; Automatically rebuild their original structure.
Like a rice farm in the forest village.After a while, Farm is covered with trees, That They have been there before.
This happens over time, That Human hand It has been farther away.
Needless to say, The environmental degradation factor is human.
Because they do not have the opportunity to rebuild it.
I think this likely only for small scale, short duration farming, surrounded by the mother system

Many studies clearly demonstrate that whatever the original reason of farm abandonment might be, given enough time the vegetation cover ultimately recovers and becomes quite similar to that on the uncultivated.

Regards, in dry and semi-arid conditions your hypothesis does not answer. In places where rainfall is high, your hypothesis is probably correct, because rain (low salinity water) is an effective factor in improving agricultural conditions.
