When dealing with a manuscript I comprehended that my co-authors and myself have to read, update, expand, correct the manuscript for about 40 times before it is sent to the journal. Plus a statistician should be included. Plus proofreading. This number is let’s say final and this number can be divided to the number of co-authors. Probably this partly depends on the organization of writing/publishing from institution to institution. The number is an estimate for the publication in a journal indexed in Current Contents.

I think this number of checking times is depending on the strength of the journal want to be published in it.
Hi Goran. There is a proverb which I follow when I write an article that is "well began is half done". My superviser in the Ph.D (also his name Goran) suggested that I should revise the manuscript 4 times before submission. This is resonable because always new articles relevant to your subject is published and you need to modify your manuscript accordingly if you continued revising it for so many times.
Thanks Fairez. My opinion is that minimally 4 times is for correction of the core (the updates on the topic itself)of the manuscript. Another corrections include new authors or their order, new email addresses, changes in the order of paragraphs etc.
There is no clearcut value or guidelines on the number of times a manuscript should be checked but greater is always good. Check until you are not satisfied, until your time permits and until your eyes don’t get tired!!
