In my opinion, the statement is absolutely correct. When preparing training courses, if you want to or not, you have to learn something new / update the existing knowledge.
Answering questions, sometimes unexpected, you pass the experience and knowledge, formulate the answer and in a subterranean way you understand the topic better, note for yourself what else you should learn, what to understand.
I do understand the good intention of the question and I agree with it. No question about this.
That said, however can't we understand education not in causal terms, but in terms of correlations? Education is a continuous and open-ended process by which every single person involved gets to be transformed, eventually. If education does not transform and enhance life, it is then just reduced to doctrine.
That's totally true, without enough knowledge you won't be able to reflect your education! so being update is the main requirement for teaching someone.

You cannot give what you do not have! It is a crime in life to disseminate ignorance and teach mediocrity. All educator must first have learnt somethings considerably and still learning!
it is easy to present knowledge out of the abundance of what you have acquired over time. While you educate others, also, you get more educated; because there will be somethings that tends to challenge your thoughts and knowledge from questions or interactions with the students. There will always be something to learn more each time you teach others. It may be on How to educate, when, where, why and in what sequence must the points be presented! This forms the contents of the curriculum for educating!
We need know considerably about the subject matter and willing to keep learning to educated well!
I always enjoyed this quote from theology - 'Well then, if you teach others, why don't you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you steal?'
Leading by example and reflection is essential in helping others in their journey of discovery.
