Do you think that all sections whether rich or poor all demands dowry. Because of this evil (dowry system) so many innocent women are loosing their lives. Wealthy people are also not above greed.
The dowry was a big problem to famiies in the past up to the early 1970s of the past century as people could not afford to provide the dowry for the wedding of young people. Currently, there is no dowry in its general sense. The lroblem is so accute with unemployment which prevails in all corners of the country that has its negative consequences on all people, especially the young. Looking for jobs to ensure making safe heavens for making families is an aim for most couples to be achieved.
Today in Germany it's not a problem I think. As women are generally well educated in Germany, they are sometimes or often in the role of having to decide between more than only one candidate. Since the "dowry" is not in money and possessions, but in the ability to deal lovingly with the woman, and to earn enough money that he can feed a family, and is well educated, and is also ready for a role change, if necessary.
Dowry is still part of the marriage tradition in Ghana. However, the extravagant material requirements have been drastically reduced. This saves the husband of the great financial burden to marry while avoiding premarital affairs and pregnancies.
According to Islamic law, male has to pay the dowry.
“And give to the women (whom you marry) their mahr (obligatory bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) with a good heart…” [al-Nisaa’ 4:4] Quran
Some people follow this in the right manner and it is not burden for either party but safety for the wife in times of need.
Sometimes females demand a lot and it becomes a burden for the males. This is seen in Saudi Arabian culture so many men are having difficulties in getting married.
Taking the last 5 generations, in our family dowry was no practice, although living in South Eastern Europe. In the general social environment, however, it was common practice. Seems to be connected with the economic status of women in a society and with the transfer of land between generations, i.e. dowry as economic compensation for the lower social status of women in a country, I guess.
I have served in almost all regions of the country. My observation is that from Eastern region to the North Eastern region of the country, the impact of dowry is almost negligible except for sporadic instances.
During 1970 to 1980 there were very positive indications in northern India when the educated boys themselves refused any dowry. But after 1980,the condition is worsening day by day.
The system still exists in India. One cannot discriminate between poor and rich. Educated people are also involved but I hope that dowry system will progressively decrease in future.
I was astonished to hear from my co-bus passenger that there are fixed rates starting from few few lakhs to many. Lowest for private jobs followed by state government and central government jobs. The rates increase with the higher level of the jobs.
Yes in almost all sections of Indian society the dowry is prevalent. It is a social evil which should be curbed. It is more prevalent in Archer sections.sometimes the poor fellows who don't have enough money become prey of it.
The dowry system in India refers to the durable goods, cash, and real or movable property that the bride's family gives to the bridegroom, his parents, or his relatives as a condition of the marriage.
Dowry stemmed from India's skewed inheritance laws, and the Hindu Succession Act needed to be amended to stop the routine disinheritance of daughters. Dowry is essentially in the nature of a payment in cash or some kind of gifts given to the bridegroom's family along with the bride and includes cash, jewellery, electrical appliances, furniture, bedding, crockery, utensils and other household items that help the newlyweds set up their home. Dowry is referred to as Dahez in Arabic (derived from Islamic jahez-e-fatimi). In far eastern parts of India, dowry is called Aaunnpot.
The dowry system is thought to put great financial burden on the bride's family. In some cases, the dowry system leads to crime against women, ranging from emotional abuse and injury to even deaths. The payment of dowry has long been prohibited under specific Indian laws including the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and subsequently by Sections 304B and 498A of the Indian Penal Code. Dowry crimes may be in the form of cruelty, domestic violence, abetment to suicide, and dowry murder.
The dowry at present is a source of both joy and curse in the society. It is also a joy to the husband and his relatives who get cash, jewellery, costly dress, utensil and furniture. It is our moral duty, social obligation and legal right to fight against the dowry system. The evils of dowry system must be removed at any cost. At public pressure the Government has enacted certain anti- dowry laws but these have not produced the desired results. The effort of the people in society need to act rationally, if they want this evil is to be removed. The lofty expenditure of the marriage ceremony must be cut down. Women must be trained since girlhood that their life is not hopeless without marriage. They should be encouraged to have higher education. Their age of marriage should be raised. They should be encouraged to enter into various fields of paid jobs, as their higher economic status also discourages demands for dowry. The practice of mass marriage should be encouraged for the sake of economy.
I totally agree with Helen Gouse with regard to dowry, and I think that if we wisely follow the religions' rules, it is not a burden; it will be a bless. In India, it is a burden, but it is the responsibility of the society affiliations and educators to start the change
Thank you for all the recommendation. All the educated people can bring a change in the society by practicing what is in best interest of both families and not burdening anybody
There are only a few exceptions for dowry issue but majority of the people are suffering with this social evil in India. Even though several awareness camps conducted, severe punishment implemented, strict rules framed .....but no use....
When women get more independent and have more money, such strange behaviours have forgotten. In the distant past, this occurred between the powerful but claims on emotions between two people can be stronger.
Surely though, dowries indicate marriage between families, rather than couples?
providing dowry is a kind of ugly tradition impeding the marriage of youngsters in Iran because the family cannot afford it. unfortunately , some bad custom and traditions are detrimental to the young members of society but they are common. educated people should do their best to change them. best
The Dowry, the giving of gifts or money to a groom on behalf of the bride's family is common practice in India, a marital tradition which dates back centuries. Dowry is an immoral practice and people need to change and put a stop to it. Fortunately, the practice of dowry doesn't exist in my country.
I think we are deviating from the science while discussing ion the dovery and several many unwanted issues. it seems that just to increase the RG score people are ready to discuss any issues. To me the basic purpose of the Research gate is to share the research findings and popularize science. If it is so the Research Gate should put a filter on such question to avoid waste of scientific mandate meant for doing science.
Dear Dr Amrit Lal Singh Ji if you have any problem with the query then you should avoid it and should not answer it. Does RG score has any physical significance in our life?
