What are the possible arguments against the "right to sell"? How would you regulate this prohibition? Could I give away the right to privacy for free?
Yes, we have the right to sell our right to privacy. Billions of people who are using social media, apps, e-commerce website, or registering for product warranty are selling the rights to privacy by accepting the terms set by the businesses. The customers (we) are selling the right to privacy to business for using the social media platform, app, website, or any other service for free. Currently, we are involved in a barter transaction. A right is not a duty. You don't have to exercise a right, or to put it another way, a right to do x entails the right to not do x. Moreover, the customers aren't selling their right to privacy since there would be no one acquiring a new right to privacy; i.e. there is no exchange in the way that e.g. a fisherman might sell his fishing licence (which gave him certain rights in a regulated fishing area) to someone else who thereby acquires those rights. Rather, the customer is simply relinquishing his right to privacy in return for something of value to him. If the provider of the value did themselves not have a right to privacy, the transaction wouldn't now give them a right to privacy; it would merely take away the customer's right.
The right to privacy is usually only becoming an issue, if someone feels that his/her right to privacy has been violated and makes a report to relevant authorities. In other words: if such is not done then the right to privacy remains dormant. What Karl writes above is another consideration: who would like to buy my right to privacy?
