This is NOT a question about religious prohibitions or health considerations.
For this issue, what is the fundamental moral principle that would be acceptable to most people from diverse cultures, societies and civilizations?

I do not think that this a moral issue, it is more convention or tradition. I do not think that there could be any moral explanation or justification whatsoever why it is fine to eat animal A but not animal B. If there is, I would be interested in hearing it.
