As we all know, small strain theory is very important in continuum mechanics. It helps linearize the strain tensor as the second-order terms are neglected. Most of the contexts I found read: the displacements are assumed to be much smaller (indeed, infinitesimally smaller) than any relevant dimension of the body, and use expressions like this:||Grad(u)||
