yes..this rat race is affecting the startup and growth of new/ upcoming journals of all streams.
Personally Sharique, I don't think that this is the case. All journals start from the same base - nothing. As to if a journal is successful - and remains successful is due to many factors - rather than just existing. What I think that is far more the reason that new journals struggle to get established - is that the market is 'flooded' - especially with 'pop-up-overnight' open access journals.
Academic publishing is one of the most lucrative, most profitable businesses on earth. Established academics want to publish in respected established journals. As Dean says, the field has been flooded with brand new journals. These are not being led by established and respected academics, or connected to academic societies. Instead they simply pop into existence, usually in order to make money. And because established academics know the difference between an established journal and a pop up one, there is no real gain to be published in the latter. The new journal often acts in a ‘predatory’ way in order to get people to publish there, spamming academics continually, often with promises of fast turnaround and/or cheap publication costs for open access, and/or offers to join an editorial board. This is an attempt to appeal to the ego of an academic who doesn’t know they are possibly being scammed. This is an all-too common story.
