this is not exactly my area of expertise, but what came to mind is the broken windows theory. In a nutshell: Nice neighborhoods lower crime rates and increase the overall acceptance and identification within a certain area. It also touches theories of aestheticism, of course.

More importantly, however, I believe that run-down schools tend not to be located in wealthier parts of a city. Thus, there might be larger variables at play (e.g. SES, catchment areas etc.) that influence pupils learning, let alone everything J. Hattie has shown us.

On instinct, I would go with: Yes, the appearance of a school might enhance pupils' achievement.

This is an interesting question. Of course there are several factors to be considered when evaluating student progress. And while curriculum content and experiences also play a critical role in student learning, the educational space is crucial to meaningful educational experiences. A nicely constructed building with well-outfitted learning spaces can go a long way to stimulate learning.

Nice building may not be factor for the progress of the students but it may influence few students only.

Appearance of a building does not necessarily influence pupils learning. The whole idea of any building being 'nice' is very subjective. On the other hand good design ( human-centric spaces which allow and evoke sensory exchanges, sensible space planning) can't but enhance learning. Aesthetics does play a role on learning, only at this point of emergence with other factors (when functions are okay, interactions are engaging, and spaces are communicative).

No, many famous principal scientists are/were completing their early stages of schools in a very simple schools with ordinary building, so I think that this issue will affect not on the scientific level or achievement but on the internal psychology of the students.

yes, nice architectural structure and environment has a great influence on the academic performance of pupils. African pupils are highly motivated to be very active in class or take part and perform better when they are put in a nice and attractive environment. They normally want to work hard to commensurate their environment. No wonder Africans are able to work for more hours overseas than in their homeland.
