I believe I have also read this too, similar with other coronavirus types the heavy handed immune response in reaction to Covid 19 can cause damage to the surrounding tissue, like what was seen with SARS back in the day. However severe COVID-19 infections dont always lead to sever immune response , there are plenty of cases of more tapered responses that the body takes.
Like everything Covid related its still early days for the science to be robust
Higher IgG levels were detected in patients who had more severe diseases while patients with very mild disease have relatively low antibody titres detected
Sorry, but I think the preponderance of data indicate that in general, this is a disease that impacts weakened immune systems rather than hyperactive immune systems. I think the IgG data are an indication that the disease has spread through a greater proportion of the lungs of those patients with severe disease as opposed to those with mild disease.
Adaptive immune responses are essential for SARS-CoV-2 virus clearance. The innate immune cells, such as macrophages have shown to cause a significant production of IL-6 suggesting they may contribute to the excessive inflammation in COVID-19 disease.
