I seem able to get any answer I please just by searching a little more. Where is the truth? Concerning untouched Amazon rain forest, when people measure carbon flux, do they include the carbon leaving in water runoff? Is any real sequestration going on in a climax forest?
I view this perhaps simplistically without formal study. The carbon stored in old growth trees may not be increasing, as limbs or leaves may fall, but as long as the forest stands, much is sequestered. If the trees are consumed in fire, much of the stored carbon is released, and it will take many years to return. If the tree was felled and wood used for lumber, much of the carbon remains stored for extended periods as homes or furnature. Portions used for paper products recycle faster to release the stored carbon. If the tree falls and remains, it will break dwn over time, slowly releasing its carbon. If the tree falls into the stream and is buried in sediment, it may be sequestered for hundreds of years as the air needed for decomposition never arives. Forests can regenerate and regrow through time, and there are periods of more rapid growth, rapid sequestration and slower periods as droughts or various firms of damage. And below ground, there is also varying degrees of decomposition and release, or sometimes accumulation of carbon in the hydric conditions of wetland soils, with some possible releases in severe drought driven wildfires. Carbon cycle and storage has many complexities that respond to natural and induced disturbances, management and focused decisions and goals of those involved. All I can imagine is that carbon flux studies can be very complex and technical, and difficult to expand the specific research studies to ecosystem level responses such as the Amazon, and what the forest clearing, the use or non-use of the stored carbon in logs, landscape forest fires, drainage of wetlands, and conversions to agriculture may mean to world carbon releases, and how these might be mitigated. The sequestration in mature forests to me is the banked storage of carbon in the old growth trees, roots, etc. It is not necessarily much new sequestration, but more substantial if quickly released.
