It is well known that higher plants have interstitial transport of nutrients or photosynthates due to their different tissues and organs. However, macroalgae are relatively backward in evolution, with almost no true differentiation of tissues or organs between their cells.
So, macroalgae, especially some of the more complex macroalgae like Sargassum, due to the huge differences in their organizational structures, is there really a transfer of nutrients or photosynthates between these “tissues” between cells or between the “organs”? If not, how are the different parts of the macroalgae related to each other? If so, which substances are involved in this process?
