We do not have it defined yet, but it seems that Lepidoptera defoliators present outbreaks in cycles in Brazil. This happened last year again with Thyrinteina arnobia (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) which presented an outbreak in south of Bahia State and north of Espirito Santo State, Brazil. Outbreaks of this pest last one or a few years and the insect population drops to residual numbers when it is very difficult to find any individual of this pest.
I would like to hear about similar or not experience in other countries.
I don't work directly with those insects, but I do know that Hyblaea sp. and Thyrinteina are cyclic in some parts of Mexico.

I understand that consecutive outbreaks of Uraba lugens (Lep: Nolidae) occured in Western Australia between 1982-1988 and also 2009-2010, and affected nearly 250.000 ha of Eucalytus marginata forest.

In Cuba there are reported some Lepidoptera that feed on Eucalyptus leaves. Eupseudosoma involuta (Erebidae), Nystalea indiana (Notodontidae) and others moths were find feeding on leaves of diffrents species of Eucalyptus. The information appears in Bruunner et al. 1975. In Colombia we have ocasional outbreaks of Cargolia arana (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) in Eucaliptus grandis. Also Sabulodes caberata and Sabulodes glaucularis (Geometridae). In Eucaliptus saligna we get Oxydia platypterata and Oxidia vesulia (Geometridae). Other lepidoptera species reported feeding on Eucaliptus grandis include Phobetron hipparchia (Limacodidae), Sibine nesea (Limacodidae) and Oiketicus kirbyi (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) on Eucaliptus globulus The information appears in Madrigal 2003. The equations describing the relationships with delays between predator and prey can have oscillatory solutions, as well as chaotic solutions which have large population explosions then many years of low population, eg

The insects present cycles, or the environment conditions (e.g. weather) present cycles?
Many native defoliators present cycles in their native ecosystems: spruce budworms and loopers in Canada, Ormiscodes in Chile. Defoliators The causes of these cycles have not been clearly established. The cycles can be short: 10 years or long, 30 years, approximately. Different theories have been put forth . In the case indicated by Jose, Eucalyptus is a non-native species to Brazil and the population records are probably too short to establish periodicity.

Congratulations for your answer. Your comments are very bright. Thyrinteina arnobia can undergo many generations in guava without losing its reproductive capacity. On the other hand, this insect presents population deterioration after a few generations feeding on eucalytpus.
