My goal is to establish diagnosis of NAFLD/NASH and follow-up disease progression.
I obtained some H&E sections of needle biopsy from patients and mouse liver tissues. Would H&E sections be sufficient to make diagnosis of NAFLD/NASH, and to obtain the NAFLD activity score (NAS) and fibrosis?
Shall I order special stains such as Oil-O-red for lipid, CD45 or F4/80 for inflammatory cells, and trichrome stain for fibrosis?
Some of the stains you mentioned works. Other stains are Masson trichrome & hematoxylin and eosin.
When evaluation of intralobular inflammation is difficult, immunohistochemical staining for leukocyte common antigen (a marker of lymphocytes) and CD68 (a marker of histiocytes/Kupffer cells) may be beneficial. Immunohistochemical staining for cytokeratin 8/18 is useful to objectively evaluate hepatocellular ballooning.

In my experence a good H&E and a tricrome staining are enough for diagnosis.
In the clinical practice for making the final diagnosis there is no need to use special stains
