I am trying to build a water immersion objective for my OCT sample arm (just like a simple microscope objective). I am wondering if I need to use lenses with anti-reflective coatings or not.
I would also like to know if there are any problems if I immerse the lenses with AR coating into water or PBS. Since these lenses usually can be cleaned in soapy water, I assume there should not be any critical problems.

you can use anti-reflection coating in water in your design. you must take care about the materials must be unsolvable in water only

basically yes, the AR coating acts in water primarily as intermediate layer between glass of the front lens and the water (solution...) to protect the glass surface. Usually modern, state-of-the-art AR coatings are not harmed by most immersion liquids, provided you rinse and clean them after use.
