I am using Nafion to cover my electrodes used to make biofuel cells, in order to block chloride ions from reaching the electrode.

Unfortunately, at a physiological concentration of chlorides, Nafion does not seem to work and I have a current drop and I record a current similar to the one I get when I don't use Nafion on my electrodes.

Do I have to pretreat Nafion somehow? My understanding is that it should already be negatively charged, so it can be used without any further treatment to prevent chlorides from reaching the electrode surface.

I cannot find much in literature regarding this issue, as Nafion seems to always work really well.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
